What is Kombucha & Why is it Used in Our Beauty & Body Products?
Kombucha is an ancient fermented tea that naturally contains many essential amino acids, vitamins, minerals, organic acids, and enzymes which are considered beneficial to the skin’s dermal layer.  Kombucha is a biochemical powerhouse when used in cosmetics and personal care products.  Known as “The Tea of Immortality,” the origins of Kombucha have become lost over time, but it is thought to have originated in the Far East.  In today’s modern world it is being rediscovered and gaining renewed interest.
Amino acids are the building blocks of living tissue, which are essential for cellular function.  The topical application of amino acids contained in Kombucha help the skin and scalp to retain moisture and balance the skin's sebum production.  This provides a smoother texture to the skin.
Natural vitamin C in Kombucha promotes healing of the skin, reduces lines and wrinkles, aids in the production of collagen and can even increase natural sun protection factor (SPF), to decrease sun damage.  Vitamin C also acts as an anti-oxidant, and may help to reduce free-radicals produced on the skin.
B vitamins, that occur naturally in Kombucha, help to increase moisture content in the hair and skin by building a natural barrier on the skin through the production of ceramides and fatty acids.   B vitamins stimulate faster hair growth, as well as regulate oil gland secretion on the scalp and skin.  B vitamins also help reduce clogged pores, inflammation and acne associated with oily skin.

The process of fermentation used to produce Kombucha naturally breaks down nutrients to a more bio-available form.  It converts inorganic minerals to the more easily assimilated organic form, thus making Kombucha a mineral powerhouse for the skin and scalp.

Kombucha contains lactic acid which is a naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acid (AHA).  Alpha hydroxy acids are effective but gentle exfoliants, and are useful in the management of dry skin, acne and wrinkles.  AHA helps to improve the texture of skin and repairs damage done by the sun.  Lactic acid is noted for it's rich moisturizing attributes and it's ability to exfoliate dead skin cells without provoking skin irritation. Lactic acid may also increase collagen production which can help to diminish the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.  Queen Cleopatra was known to use sour fermented milk (rich in lactic acid) and rose petals on her skin to keep it vibrant and youthful looking.

Malic acid contained in Kombucha is another alpha hydroxy acid with a slightly larger molecular structure than lactic acid.  This results in a more even penetration of the skin and helps to reduce the appearance of age spots and freckles.  Malic acid evens out skin tone, firms and tightens pores and significantly reduces the symptoms of rosacea.

A mild alpha hydroxy acid in Kombucha, gluconic acid, provides beneficial effects on the skin by minimizing fine lines and wrinkles.  Additionally it helps to increase the elasticity of skin, stimulate collagen production and balance out oily skin.  The gluconic acid naturally occurring in Kombucha acts as a penetrating agent, allowing other extracts within a formula to be readily absorbed on the skin and scalp.

Usnic acid in Kombucha may possibly act as an antibacterial substance for use in the treatment of skin and scalp irritations.  It also potentially exhibits antifungal, antiviral, antiprotozoal, anti-inflammatory and analgesic activities. Further research is needed to prove these statements. Other unique characteristics of usnic acid are it's ultraviolet absorption (UV protection), and natural bug repellent action.

Enzymes in Kombucha aid in the removal of scar tissue, especially those due to acne and stretch marks.  As one ages, cell turnover rate decreases and can result in a dry, rough and dull appearing skin.  Enzymes gently digest and remove dead superficial skin cells.  These enzymes reveal smoother, brighter, fresher skin and allow an increased penetration of beneficial ingredients into the skin.

Under carefully controlled conditions, infusions of organic green tea, organic black tea, organic rooibos tea and organic nettle are fermented to create a 100% natural Kombucha.  Our highly specialized Kombucha is made without the use of harmful chemical processing, chemically altered ingredients or dangerous preservatives.  Time is taken to slowly and naturally infuse the unique healing properties of our specially selected organic herbs to produce a truly artisan, therapeutic and unique product that has many applications in the beauty and body product industry.
